Many people still think that massage is just a "feel good thing", but massage is one of the earliest remedial practices and is probably the most natural and instinctive means of relieving pain and discomfort. It is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body using various techniques for the purpose of promoting circulation of the blood and lymph, relaxing the muscles and pain relief.

When a person has sore, aching muscles, a bruise or a wound, it is a natural and instinctive impulse to touch, press or rub that part of the body to bring about relief.

Records show that massage was practiced by the Chinese as early as 3000 B.C. and has been a major part of medicine for at least 5000 years. Evidence also shows that in prehistoric times men and women massaged their muscles and used oils as a means of healing. In nearly all ancient cultures, some form of massage was practiced.

In some groups a healer, spiritual leader or doctor was selected to administer healing power. These groups used massage to improve their sense of well being and physical appearance.

Massage was the first and most important of the medical arts and was practiced, developed and taught primarily by physicians. It has been written about extensively in medical books since 500 B.C.

And besides all that...it just feels good!

What is massage?

Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body using various techniques to promote circulation of the blood and lymph, muscle relaxation and pain relief.

Who should have massage?

Everyone! People who exercise, have tight muscles, muscle aches or pain, neck and back pain and chronic disorders such as allergies, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia.

How often should you have massage?

It is a good idea to have massage on a regular basis. Once a month is usually sufficient to maintain good health and elasticity of the muscles. However, if you are experiencing chronic problem areas such as a stiff neck or shoulder muscles or low back pain you may want to have massage more often.

TYPES OF MASSAGE AND THEIR BENEFITS

Swedish Massage
Full Body Relaxation Massage

Various techniques are used to relax and condition the muscles in the body.

Benefits include --

SKIN: Increases circulation in the skin and improves glandular activity.

MUSCLES: Encourages nutrition and development of muscle tissue by stimulating circulation, nerve supply and cell activity. Forces toxic fluids out and draws a fresh supply of blood to the area. Waste products are removed and muscle fiber adhesions are loosened.

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM: Increases blood flow, the heart works less hard, production of blood cells is increased and toning of vessel walls occurs.

NERVOUS SYSTEM: Sedative effect, stimulates languid nerves.

Deep Tissue Massage

A combination of circular friction, cross and transverse stripping are used to release tightness in the muscles to allow them to relax.

Benefits include --

MUSCLES: Myofascial release, fiber spreading and dislodges adhesions and deposits in the muscles, stimulates circulation, forces toxic fluids out and draws fresh supply of blood to the area.

Sustained pressure for a period of time to deactivate the trigger point and release taut bands of muscle.
